DIY old door decor

All items in the house age sooner or later, acquiring an unattractive appearance. But if the furniture can be easily replaced, and the wallpaper re-glued, then what to do with the doors? They are not so cheap to dismantle and purchase new ones. Let's admit, given the costs of other things during the repair, I don’t want to bother with this part for a long time. To avoid this, you can do the decoration of old doors with your own hands, which, thanks to a large number of options, often turns into an exciting activity.

The best way to freshen up an old door by slightly changing the design of a room is to paint it a new color. In this case, you can use either one or several shades, highlighting, for example, panel parts, moldings or a frame.

Depending on the size of the room, the door can be a bright detail or merge with the decoration of the walls, thereby not dividing the space. The last option is suitable for small rooms. In such cases, give preference to light colors.

It is recommended to purchase acrylic paint that does not leave odors, is evenly applied and does not harm health, which is important for a bedroom or a nursery. But first you need to prepare your “canvas”: even several layers of paint will not hide the bumps of the old tree. In some cases, you will have to remove the doors in order to maximize all the flaws.

Since it is necessary to work with a wide area, the application method is of great importance for creating a neat final look. Mentally divide the product into several small sections, evenly painting them with even horizontal or vertical stripes. Being engaged in paneled doors, cover them in the following order: places of inserts, central levels, sides.

After complete drying, you can cover the surface with a protective varnish, so that the updated door lasts even longer.

Plain colors will suit many styles not because of their neutrality, but because of the laconicism, restraint and simplicity that are relevant in modern interior design. You can follow the fashion without major investments or experienced craftsmen.

If monotonous decor is not your option, feel free to take a brush in your hands and paint your boring old door with interesting plots. People with art education can use it as a canvas, decorating with still lifes, landscapes, cartoon characters. For the rest, there are stencils or vinyl stickers - no less effective tools that will also provide a beautiful result.

So, you will need: PVA glue, napkins, sponge, scissors for cutting the necessary details of the picture. Paper is applied to a surface previously cleaned of dust and dirt, and then glue is applied to it.To avoid wrinkles or bubbles, a sponge can align the picture by removing excess fluid.

After the door dries, and you have to wait about a day, the picture needs to be fixed with ordinary furniture varnish. Almost any material can be decorated in this way, but it is with wood that it combines best.

It is a shame when after repair there are several meters of unused wallpaper. Do not throw it away - it is better to leave them for the decor of old doors! This is absolutely not a costly solution that will refresh the interior and hide the shortcomings of the product.

They can cover the entire area or individual details - it all depends on the image, as well as the design of the room. Some types of wallpaper have a relief structure, making the decor richer and more diverse.

For a children's or bright interior, you can take photo murals with landscapes, paintings or other doors. Small games with a perspective will visually increase the space. Only the rest of its elements should balance the composition, being a neutral background.

For the decor of old doors, you can take the rest of the fabric, especially if they served as upholstery. A similar intersection of drawings will look appropriate in one interior.

In any case, the fabric is a textural, eye-catching solution that will definitely help to refresh an old item, overcoming small flaws. You can fix it on the door using ordinary glue or furniture clips. The second option is good in that, over time, the bored part can be removed.

Lace is popular not only in clothes, but also in decor. Here, with their help, you can emphasize the refined taste of the owners by decorating the door with them.

A door trimmed with leather is certainly a sign of the status of the owners. It will fit into the office space rather than the nursery, but because of this it becomes no less interesting as an option for decor.

According to the rules, of course, such products must be ordered in stores, always from natural materials. But for a less solid interior, a substitute is quite suitable, since it can be chosen in all possible color combinations.

Rivets will be needed for the skin, which will help it to “fit” the door beautifully and lock in place. In addition, this can give the design industrial notes that are ideally suited to the style of the loft.

Fine carving on the skin or pattern will look luxurious. Another original idea: a door trimmed with old straps, but for this you will have to visit more than one flea market.

Mosaic compositions will never lose their relevance: it is beautiful, unusual and interesting to implement. Something like a puzzle, only the picture you come up with yourself.

Ceramic, glass or acrylic parts can be used. Make sure that all the colors for the future "picture" are enough. These can be realistic plots, surrealism or randomly arranged elements that are fixed with ordinary glue.

There are many ways to artificially age furniture. Some of them are professional and under normal conditions are not feasible. Others are simple tricks that successfully mimic cracked paint.

For door decor, you can use craquelure varnish, literally causing paint to crack. Do not forget that it is better to work with several layers - to give greater depth to the drawings.

A dry brush, which fluently paints the surface, giving it a shabby appearance, copes with its mission perfectly.

Several layers of paint can be rubbed with sandpaper, revealing the multi-level coating. And if in some places you rub it with a wax candle, paint the door and rub it, then the paint will disappear locally, also creating the necessary effect.

Multi-colored stained-glass windows in temples, smoothly transmitting light, always cause admiration of the audience. Why not try to create a weak, but semblance of this beauty at home, at the same time decorating the old doors?

Glass inserts are used for this method. And here you have two options: buy a finished product with a picture or decorate it yourself. The latter, of course, is more interesting, but it can be implemented after some preparation.

In addition to acrylic paints, with which a drawing is applied, you will need a special contour that creates the illusion of a metal frame. The glass sheet should be in a horizontal position so that the paint does not drip on a slippery surface before it can grasp. The finished product must be installed in the panel and fixed with glazing beads.

Moldings - elements imitating stucco molding, which is so relevant in a classic interior or art deco style, will also help decorate old doors.

Parts are usually made of foam or polyurethane, and therefore cheap, but allow you to create truly luxurious designs. You can buy ready-made components, fix them on the door with liquid nails or glue.

Typically, door decor moldings are not very diverse, but sometimes it turns out to come across aesthetic models. They can be painted in a color that intersects or contrasts with the main finish, achieving different effects.
